The picture that goes with that other post

Haven’t even had our annual start of year school conference and already we’ve had our annual start of year school heartbreak. Once again, a beloved teacher will not be there when we go back. This time, it’s the teacher that Sammi has been closest to since kindergarten — the teacher who has been her consistent support person since kindergarten. Losing that continuity is hugely upsetting for her (and for me).
Whoooo caught and killed a mousie last night? Was it Georgie? Was it Georgie?? Yes it was!! Yes it was!!! What a good boy! What a goooood booooy, yes!!! *tummy rubs*
So I go into the bathroom, but I don’t bother turning on the light because the light’s on in the hall, so I can see well enough to take care of business. I’m sitting there peeing, alone in the dark, when I realize that the bathtub is purring.
Look, if your homepage has been at www.[domain name].com/index.html, don’t redesign your site so that that address is now a 404. If you do that, I will hate you.
Sammi, playing Animal Crossing: I wish you could carry flowers around. Like, you could have the option to put them in your hair or just carry them around… Or swords. That would be cool. Or guns.
The bathtub is not your personal Thunderdome. Please stop having “two cats enter, one cat leaves” cage matches in there at 3:00 in the morning. We can hear you slamming each other’s bodies around all the way in the bedroom.
Yesterday afternoon the temperatures were a bit uncomfortable. Although not anywhere near as hot as it was earlier in the summer, the weather was just a little too sticky and the air was too still and it just kind of sucked the energy out of you to sit in a chair with those conditions. But around 3:00 it rained for about 40 seconds, and immediately afterwards the quality of the air changed — the humidity lifted and a cool breeze started moving through the house. This morning there are dozens of oak leaves on the deck. Apparently yesterday around 3:00, autumn began. How very binary.

Last night after I blogged, I found a good decongestant to give to Alice that actually made her feel like a person again, so I’m holding off on calling the doctor for a few more days while we see if we can clear up her head with OTC meds. (She already has an appointment for her yearly checkup on the 23rd, so maybe we can wait until then…)
So that means that her birthday’s on! She doesn’t feel amazing, but she feels pretty okay, and she’s F I F T E E N now and that needs to be celebrated!!! She’s opened one present so far, and is getting dressed now so we can all head out and start the day. No big plans yet, except that she definitely wants to go to GameStop.
So… Here’s to a decade and a half gone by.
Tomorrow is Alice’s birthday (yay) but at the moment it’s not looking like it’s going to be a very fun day because she’s siiiiick and she’s been siiiiiick for over a week now. I’m going to call the doctor first thing in the morning in the hopes that she can be seen sometime tomorrow (on her birthday, waaah!) or Thursday morning at the latest. She has all kinds of fun stuff planned for the rest of the week that I’d hate for her to have to miss.
I’m thinking right now that she’s got some sort of sinus infection or something like that. She’s got congestion in her head and nose, and gunk dripping down her throat giving her a sore throat, a hoarse voice, and a hacking cough. She’s had no fever, she’s got low-ish energy and kind of a low appetite, but she’s not at all sick sick like she was this spring. It doesn’t seem to be contagious, since none of us has caught any of it off of her even though she’s been coughing all over the place for a week.
I gave her a few low-key days to let her body work it out, and then I tried her with some different antihistamines in case it was ragweed-related (it’s pollen season around here), but she just isn’t getting better and it’s really making her sad. This is not how her golden birthday is supposed to go!!!
Today is 8/13, a day of great and mysterious importance to my husband.
By the way, Alice’s birthday is in one week, and it’s gonna be her Golden Birthday!!
I hate that I can never have the feeling, “yay! I got a whole bunch of work done on [one of my jobs]” without immediately having to feel, “oh crap, now I’m desperately behind in [the rest of my jobs]“.
Leave the air conditioning off and open the windows, in which case I can’t sleep because it’s too hot and humid in the house?
Or
Turn the air conditioning on and close the windows, in which case I can’t sleep because Anth’s snoring because the A/C dries out his sinuses?
